My House

Love may be blind and intoxicating, but there’s nothing like the relationship between step-children and their step-parents to pry open everyone’s eyes and force down the coffee. MY HOUSE is a madcap musical dramedy about a single Sunday in the life of a blended family: a recently married couple, both with young children from previous marriages. Set in 1976 (in that tiny moment in recent history when the country seemed to take a breath from its past — Viet Nam, Civil Rights, etc. – and its future – the internet and terrorism), the pop-infused score is filled with infectious melodies as we laugh and cry and recognize ourselves in this family’s struggle to redefine itself and survive.

Synopsis:

An adult musical dramedy from the wacky heart of a modern American
family!

Love may be blind and intoxicating, but there’s nothing like the relationship between step-children and their step-parents to pry open up everyone’s eyes and force down the coffee. MY HOUSE is a hilarious madcap musical dramady about a single Sunday in the life of a recently married couple, both with young children from previous marriages.

On this particularly whacky day, the step-mom throws a birthday party for her husband’s son. That the nine year old son “hates” her is just the beginning of the issues – the nature of love, marriage, divorce and guilt, commitment, parental roles, what to teach children, work vs. family, past loves, the future — that are rarely confronted in marriage without a looming atomic bomb to tickle them on. Between the married couple, their children and their very unpredictable previous spouses, chaos charges toward comic proportions – before the fiber of the new family itself is tested, twisted and sung and laughed about.

If normal Sundays inspire extended family connections, Sunday birthday parties of “blended” families supercharge what “extended” family means, with non stop comedy and farcical situations. The cast of six, hilariously play 18 characters as doors slam, water pipes leak, unknown relatives interfere and the omnipresent phone (still on a cord) never stops ringing.

Set in 1976 (in that tiny moment in recent history when the country seemed to take a breath from its immediate past — Viet Nam, Civil Rights, etc. – and its looming future – the internet and terrorism), the pop-infused score is filled with infectious melodies as we laugh and cry and recognize ourselves in this charming quirky family’s struggle to redefine itself and survive. MY HOUSE is laugh-out-loud funny, heartbreaking and original… just like your family!
